We’re committed

to supporting the communities we operate in

We value the importance of recognising the social, economic, and environmental aspects of our operations

Here’s some of the ways we’re making a difference…

Waste Management

Our approach to waste management affects the overall targets and objectives of our customers. As such, we are committed to increasing recycling of packaging waste by 50%, and to maintaining high standards of trade waste recycling. In 2019 alone, we have increased our recycling rate to 93%, and are on track to achieve our overall targets. Furthermore, to reduce the volume of card from cartons used to deliver books, we take any infill out of cartons and reuse for outbound packaging, use caged paper infill as infill for publisher return cartons, separate and compact card away from general waste (over 200 tonnes is sent by Bertram Library Services for recycling per year), and provide in-house card and plastic baling to ensure correct recycling.

Carbon Footprint

We understand the environmental impact that our deliveries to customers can have on the environment and therefore, aim to minimise the number of vehicles used to transport goods across our road and airfreight operations within the UK, Europe, and worldwide. Delivery partners are carefully selected, with emphasis placed on their environmental policies and practices.

Diverse Supply Chain

Bertram Group strives to have a diverse supply chain, and we commit to only using suppliers who support an agenda that is equal, diverse, and inclusive. We aim to strike a balance on all of our contracts, between working with local suppliers, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprises (VCSEs).

Volunteering

Bertram Group recognises that many colleagues volunteer their own time to support local charities and communities. As a responsible employer, Bertram Group is committed to encouraging support for organisations that are important to our colleagues and recognises the positive impact this can have on morale and team spirit. and our colleagues can apply for up to five days off per year to support these efforts.

This could be taken as five days in a row for a big event, or in small chunks of time for more regular volunteering hours.

Skills development in local communities

We support several targeted initiatives which work in partnership with customers to provide free of charge assisted learning to users. This includes, abridged versions of fiction titles for those with low reading age or abilities, dual language titles, books for reluctant or dyslexic readers, titles for BAME and LGBTQ+ communities, and titles which tackle difficult social issues.

In the last year alone, we have increased our recycling rate to 57%, and are on track to achieve our overall targets. Furthermore, to reduce the volume of card from cartons used to deliver books, we take any infill out of cartons and reuse for outbound packaging, use caged paper infill as infill for publisher return cartons, separate and compact care away from general waste (over 200 tonnes is sent by BLS for recycling per year), and provide in-house card and plastic baling to ensure correct recycling.

Volunteering

Colleagues can apply for up to five days off per year, specifically for volunteering. This could be taken as five days in a row for a big event, or in small chunks of time for more regular volunteering hours. We have no limitations on how this time is spent; our only stipulation is that they work with a registered charity.
